چکیده

4-97 ABSTRACT Ploidy in various generic Lolium Festuca progenies were assessed by flow cytometry and compared to conventional chromosome counting. In non-segregating triploid and tetraploid progenies, the cytometer estimated so accurately the level of plant ploidy that chromosomes counting would be no use. In segregant progenies, all the tetraploid plants according to the cytometer had effectively 28 chromosomes. Among the triploid and pentaploid plants detected by the cytometer, 40% of the plants were tetraploid. They represented only 29% of the progeny which must be counted.

Genetic Similarities Among Iranian Populations of Festuca, Lolium, Bromus and Agropyron Using Amplified Fragments Length Polymorphism (AFLP) Markers

The study of genetic variation and phylogenetic relationships is essential for the efficient selection of superior plant material and conducting introgression breeding programs. In Iran, despite the wide geographical distribution of grasses no report is available on the genetic diversity and relationships of cool season grass populations. In this study amplified fragment length polymorphism (AF...

Effect of Different Factors on Chemical Composition of Grass-legumes Sward

The biological value of fodder is estimated on the basis of its content of particular macroelements (N, P, K, Ca, Mg). Concentration of these components in fodder depends on many factors, mainly on the properties of soil, type of land use and growth phase of crops. The aim of this paper was to estimate the effect of soil properties, land use and species composition of a sward mixture on the con...

Molecular tagging of a senescence gene by introgression mapping of a stay-green mutation from Festuca pratensis.

* Intergeneric hybrids between Lolium multiflorum and Festuca pratensis (Lm/Fp) and their derivatives exhibit a unique combination of genetic and cytogenetic characteristics: chromosomes undergo a high frequency of homoeologous recombination at meiosis; the chromosomes of the two species can easily be discriminated by genomic in situ hybridization (GISH); recombination occurs along the entire l...

Forage grasses with lower uptake of caesium and strontium could provide ‘safer’ crops for radiologically contaminated areas

Substitution of a species or cultivar with higher uptake of an element by one with lower uptake has been proposed as a remediation strategy following accidental releases of radioactivity. However, despite the importance of pasture systems for radiological dose, species/cultivar substitution has not been thoroughly investigated for forage grasses. 397 cultivars from four forage grass species; hy...

Phylogenetic Relationships in the Festuca-Lolium Complex (Loliinae; Poaceae): New Insights from Chloroplast Sequences

The species within the Lolium/Festuca grass complex have dispersed and colonized large areas of temperate global grasslands both naturally and by human intervention. The species within this grass complex represent some of the most important grass species both for amenity and agricultural use worldwide. There has been renewed interest by grass breeders in producing hybrid combinations between th...
